Eudokia Palaiologina, Byzantine empress of Trebizond dies

Eudokia Palaiologina was a member of the Byzantine Palaiologos dynasty, which ruled Constantinople after its recapture in 1261. She married into the ruling family of Trebizond, a Byzantine successor state on the Black Sea.

As empress consort, she represented the link between two important branches of Byzantine nobility. Women like Eudokia were often used in arranged marriages to secure alliances and peace between states. Though records of her personal actions are limited, her position gave her influence at court, where queens and empresses could act as patrons of churches, monasteries, and cultural life.

Eudokia’s life also reflected the limited personal choice many noblewomen had, as their futures were bound to political strategy. Her death in 1302 marked the end of her role in these connections. While not as well remembered as male rulers, empresses like Eudokia helped shape medieval diplomacy and dynastic survival.
